As a change for our annual social evening in the winter, the committee organised a Paint In. It was based on the TV programme that Rolf Harris produced in Trafalgar Square, where he had a huge scaffold frame erected and hundreds of amateur artists across the country each painted a nominated tile, which when put together on the frame resulted in a very good likeness of the Mona Lisa classic.
Our members turned up under orders with smocks, some brushes and were given an A4 sized tile of blank card together with an A4 random piece of a painting chosen by the committee. There was no clue as to what they would be painting, they just had to copy what they were given.
They were supplied with the primary colours plus black and white, together with brushes, water, paper towels and newspaper to protect the hall furniture. As they were finished, the tiles were put on a 2.4m x 1.2m matrix board divided into 40 tiles and slowly the truth dawned. All of the members were fuelled by red and white wine and soft drinks, with the delicious smells of the American Supper laid out at the back of the hall.
Here is the actual work they were copying Cezanne's Compotier, Pitcher and Fruit and the results of their work. The Hampshire Chronicle published a big article about it in their culture section complete with two colour photographs.
